Character description
Parvana: Parvana is the protagonist of the book, she goes to the market daily to sell items and reads letters to earn money for her family. She is extremely lucky being one of not many girls that can read a specific language. She collects money by doing this and money helps her family survive the terrible life in Afghanistan. She is very close to her father but when he is taken by the Taliban, she is ripped apart by sadness and loneliness. She overcomes this pain by working at the market earning money for her family.
Nooria: The oldest sister, She is very self confident and firm. She understands situations much more than Parvana at many times, but is very argumentative as well. She is the leader of her siblings and cares for all of them. Parvana and the other siblings look up to her as a leader because she comes up with great ideas and plans to help everyone, shes very wise and smart at all times.
Ali: Ali is the 3rd youngest sibling of the family, he is only young and does not fully understand his surroundings at this point in time. He is mainly looked after by his older sibling, Nooria. Ali isn't mentioned a lot in the book, he doesn't talk much either.
Maryam: Maryam is the youngest character/family member in the book. She is only a little baby at this time and isn't talked about much. Maryam is the main reason Parvana does what she does, because she is defenseless and couldn't live without the others.
Mother: The mother helps the family stay together at the terrible times just like any mum would. She supports the brilliant ideas of the family which work great, She also helps clean up the house and makes sure everyone gets a meal, she cooks, cleans, looks after everyone and supports the family.
Mrs Weera: Mrs Weera becomes the savior of the family in the middle of the book. She is one of mothers old friends who worked at creating newspapers with mother. She helps the family stay together and brings hop back by uplifting everyone.
Shauzia: Shauzia is one of Parvana's old classmates. They both didn't know each other well but when Parvana noticed her disguised as a tea boy at the market, she knew it was Shauzia. She seems to be a quick thinker, shes smart and knows her way around. This helps Parvana at times as at one stage they both dig up graves for bones to sell them for money.
